Where am I?
As I'm sure you've all really been worried about my lack of NINJAM performance of late, I thought it time to provide an update.
For xmas I got a new PSU! :D My quad core AMD 2300 Phenom now runs! Except WinXP doesn't understand the new motherboard - it doesn't like the Firewire card for my AudioFire4, it doesn't like having my RAID pair containing my samples and the boot drive connected, minor stuff like that.
However, UbuntuStudio is rock solid, recognises all the hardware, etc. I'm currently experimenting with running Reaper 2.58 under WINE/wineasio/JACK2. Not had a chance to fully test it for performance but everything loads up (i.e. my standard drumming Reaper project!).
Ideally, of course, I'd be running Linux-native software... I just don't know where to start! :(

Very cool. We could use a

Yes indeed, there still are a few people using Linux.
I was thinking about setting up a discussion group to help council the switch to Windows 7.
I will provide tea and biscuits. :P

None of it plays nicely.
No idea why but Kontakt now causes JACK to have fits and linuxsampler simply isn't up to the job yet. I have managed to convince WinXP to boot (by disobeying ATI and using their SB7xx/AHCI driver rather than the mobo mfr's one) -- the machine boots WinXP and runs it... just crashes on shutdown . WinXP was using both AF4 and onboard sound. It seems to have lost the onboard sound... /sigh/
Hope there's something strong in that tea...

Seems like its the most used now of the releases.
My dog loves those windows 7 biscuits but they give her gas!

Damn, damn damdamdamdamdam stupid drivers.
On my old PC I'd set up a pair of nice, fast 80GB Seagate Barracuda SATA drives in as a RAID1 (striped) drive for speed of access. 160GB, 2/3rds full. Not something I wanted to mess with. New mobo supported the drive pair, recognised it straight off, no problems under linux. Crash, crash, crash under WinXP. (Still not ventured into Win7.)
So I gave in. I'd had to get IDE->SATA converters for my other drives, a 250GB WDC drive and a 12GB Seagate (with Linux on). After checking under Linux, it seemed the WDC was going to run just as fast as the RAID pair anyway... So I copied the samples over onto the WDC. Installed WinXP to one of the 80GB drives. No more RAID. No more crashes.
Just feel like I've wasted several months thinking it was something else... And my wife thinks I wasted about £70 on a new PSU (...and I have to admit she could be right...).

PlJones it's worth having a better PSU these days, the minimum cheaper bog standard PSU's can be very flaky.
It sucks having to pay out that sort of money for a PSU, I had to myself when I put a new GCard in, thought oh that's cheap until I had to buy a PSU just to power it and the machine.
Before I've done 3 cheapy psu's just with a setup that drew too much for the psu's.
But look on the upside of getting the PSU as more a upgrade and you have a spare PSU out of it too which can come in handy.
Glad ya got it sorted m8.
Hi pljones, sure glad you
Hi pljones, sure glad you got your act together, looking forward to hearing it live! Cheers!
Yes, having a spare PSU
Yes, having a spare PSU around could come in handy. I'd have liked one when I first hit problems! :D
The "old" one was a QTechnology Semi-fanless 450W from quietpc, just over 2yo when it "died" and out of warranty (part of me now thinking "fortunately"). It was a replacement for the original, which had started to stink..! (Well, the old PC was a good 5+ years old, so the PSU capacitors were likely dying.) The new one is a Corsair VX 550W with a more comfortable 5 year warranty. I used a few of the online wattage calculators and that was one factor leading me to think I was overstressing the old PSU -- a couple of them said I was running at a little over 400W.
(Earlier msg typo: "12GB drive" = "120GB drive" ;))
It's amazing how little I've forgotten (okay, so there wasn't much... ;))...
Also most peopel never use
Also most peopel never use it but if you have an nvidia chipset they have a nice utility that over clocks and under clocks, basically it tests most in ya pc like voltage settings, speeds and stuff and under or over clocks to which they run stable and fastest at.
It will most times fix a lot of bugs, but if your still getting error on shutdown then try doign a CTRL + ALT + DEL and end the process of anything 3rd party and manually exit virus checkers then shut it down, if it shuts down ok then chances are a program or service is causign it which is a good start to finding a solution.
I like Windows 7 for this as it shows you watch it's waiting for to close as it's shutting down. It also has a hybrid sleep which lets your pc turn on in , well a key press and it's on.
But if I was going to go Linux I'd follow Toms advice on Ubuntu Linux Bundle as its most used, probably is most supported and most addressed when it comes to fixes.
If I ever hear someone mention Linux it's always Ubuntu, Mac's are nice but once again when a solution is needed for achieving something you either need to be deep into it or hope someone already worked it out which most times there are only some partial solutions.
But Windows 7 has partially restored my faith in my OS for now. I still have my old XP install which is years old and been patched and bandaged many times, and Win 7 is taking more resources for my daw/synth setup but when I get a chance I'm hoping a bit more mem will sort. This is only a 937 dual core chip but the mobo is a lan party, very stable and achieves a lot more than a lot of newer boards would. With upgrading a mobo and using cubase and music hardware and pushing to the limits with lots of vsti's and tracks a mobo can be the death of it all.
But I think I could really do with 8 gig of mem and a quad core really, so soon I will probably encounter the pain of upgrading.
Or turn off the Windows 7 Graphics options which I really don't want to do. :|
