Pick a song and play it

Event Date:
October 1, 2010 4:00pm -0700

This event will last 30 minutes using a BPI long enough to cover the verse and chorus of a pre-determined song. Nominations for song choice can be posted as a comment to this thread until September 26th and voting on the nominations will take place after that, also in the comments of this thread.

I'm going with "Rock and

I'm going with "Rock and Roll All Nite" by KISS, but since I generally play it as a bluegrass tune on the banjo I'm not sure if I'd recommend voting for it...

Nice choice but how could

Nice choice but how could you go past achy breaky heart? It has all the elements. ( trying not to laugh)

Great initiative! Keep at

Great initiative! Keep at it.

It is...and another great

It is...and another great song is YMCA

Seriously why dont we pick something that can develop as a jam piece...sort of along the lines of the rock opera idea..something we can go to town with

Let's do Tommy the rock

Let's do Tommy the rock opera!

I'm going to have to

I'm going to have to officially revoke my nomination for "Rock and Roll All Nite"... I looked it up and apparently I don't play it at all like the original version. (I was wanting to suggest a 16 bar/64 BPI-ish verse/chorus type song, but it appears to have at least few bridges...) I'll come up with a good one yet...

Might be an idea to make

Might be an idea to make something based on the progression of a chosen song.
Ya might have more success doing it that way because naturally ninjamers tend to push off course.
Maybe to start with an era, like 60s 70s or 80s, anything after that might be a bit too either unknown or copmlicated, but would probably contain less or no bridges.
I'd vote 60s or 70s, I reckon this would have most success with all instrument types.

I prefer 70s myself but these could be a good starting point.

Sony are a nice bunch. I

Sony are a nice bunch. I have a rule of buying nothing from them.

I thought we were going to

I thought we were going to do something original? can't we just define some progressions for verses and a chorus and crack on?

anyway, an original expedition would be cool also..

And this too, will pass.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Let's throw it wide open...

Let's throw it wide open... original "compositions" can be nominated as well, maybe include the chord progression/time/bpi etc in with the nomination?

I'm still going to nominate a cover, I think, one of the things I am curious to try would be multiple vocalists on the chorus parts...

Long as they all sing the

Long as they all sing the same words, don't want someone singing "I'm too sexy for my mic" then another singing "I'm not as sexy as him"
And saying that, long as there's no Right Said Fred music then it will be a blast.

Damn ill have to sing that

Damn ill have to sing that now andy..you know that

Damn ill have to sing that

Damn ill have to sing that now andy..you know that

LOL, yeah it sorta sticks in

LOL, yeah it sorta sticks in the head and wont get out. :)
I

It's a little harder than I

It's a little harder than I expected to pick one... I Hear You Knocking... final answer...

I think this is a situation

I think this is a situation where democracy isnt the best approach....you or someone needs to nominate a song and then get ppl to attend..its up to them to learn the sequence before hand..and its a first go soooo its no big deal...

But this is so fun... how

But this is so fun... how else would we know that you have a secret Billy Ray Cyrus fetish or that when Andy dreams he dreams of men wearing fishnet tank-tops? :P

So... I think nextday is

So... I think nextday is right and I will ultimately just pick a song, but here is the list, in case you do feel like voting (very liberally derived from the above comments...):

  • Rock and Roll All Nite
  • Achy Breaky Heart
  • YMCA
  • Tommy (We're Not Gonna Take It!?)
  • Best of the 50's (Johnny B. Goode?)
  • Best of the 60's (Satisfaction?)
  • Best of the 70's (Bohemian Rhapsody?)
  • Original composition
  • I'm Too Sexy
  • I Hear You Knocking

Voting will close (or I will pick) on the 29th to give a few days between then and the jam...

Btw is everybody seeing the

Btw is everybody seeing the correct time for this event?
I see 4pm California time which should be around midnight
in europe.

Well, the Sword of Damocles

Well, the Sword of Damocles awaits... I thought I was going to pick an original composition, but I'm going to go with I Hear You Knocking after all... the progression is pretty simple, I *think* it lends itself well to soloing, and the "verse" is only two lines long, so if someone wants to freestyle those it might be easy...

G
You went away and left long time ago

Now your knocking on my door
              C
I hear you knocking
                           G
But you can't come in
              C
I hear you knocking
                           D
Go back where you been

I begged you not to go but you said goodbye
Now your telling me all your lies
I hear you knocking
But you can't come in
I hear you knocking
Go back where you been

You better get back to your used to be
'Cause your kind of love ain't good for me
I hear you knocking
But you can't come in
I hear you knocking
Go back where you been

I told you way back in '52
That I would never go with you
I hear you knocking
But you can't come in
I hear you knocking
Go back where you been

I believe it will work at 110 BPM and 48 BPI, I'll try and put a loop on a second channel but I'm not that great at it so no worries if someone else wants to do a loop too/instead.

(Hopefully) see you in 51 hours...

I also wanted to note that

I also wanted to note that 30 minutes at 110 & 48 is over 100 repetitions, so I think there's a good chance we will get bored and want to switch to another progression...

"Andy dreams he dreams of

"Andy dreams he dreams of men wearing fishnet tank-tops? :P" .....without a doubt quote of the year. ahahahahhahahahhahahahaHAHAH

I also think people need a chord chart...ie G for X number of bars C for X number of bars.

(y), will post soon...

(y), will post soon...

It seemed more complicated

It seemed more complicated before...
|| G / / / | / / / / | / / / / | / / / / |
| C / / / | / / / / | G / / / | / / / / |
| C / / / | / / / / | D / / / | / / / / ||

Or 'The Cat Came Back', a slightly demented favorite of mine:
|| Em / D / | C / B / | Em / D / | C / B / |
|| Em / D / | C / B / | Em / D / | C / B / ||

Well that was real fun, went

Well that was real fun, went better than I expected, actually. I think the takeaway would be not to bother picking a tune next time, but for each participant to come with a few chord progressions already in mind, so when one progression got played out someone could easily call out another...

Good for you mate, the short

Good for you mate, the short time I could stay that sounded excellent. It seems to me you only need one person who has the progression well soughted to keep doing it so the others can eventually slide in as well. Well done.:P Not the best sentences i have ever written but you see what i mean.

Just listened to your

Just listened to your session and it's great! I think there will be a demand now for a further one. People realize, it wasn't as scary as they thought. Well done for arranging it all!!!

Ug, was this last night? aw

Ug, was this last night? aw well, was in no fit state anyway! will check it out :)

And this too, will pass.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Yeah I was thinking when was

Yeah I was thinking when was it but then I see it was today but +100, for me that woudl be a late friday night so was thinking it was today, or rather tonight.
I see another packed NINBOT server so I guess it was over in there?

We sorta did some different progressions last night in the other NINBOT server too, was a good night alround for all us from the sounds of it. :)
