I think Tom's got plans for the groups to be used for stuff like this. Something like you set up a group - say "Thursday Blues" - then you can book out a server for a jam session.
I'd have to disagree on the groups being a good thing, as much as it would be cool and really be nice to be part of one its been shown in the past so many times it doesn't work, it just leaves people to feel excluded.
In my opinion groups should be formed privately and then maybe they can rent the NINBOT's NINJAM and Radio servers for performances, or open a server themselves and find online venues to gig at.
This will still leave some upset but a lot less from excluding people in an open environment.
And with any group formed there are always that power hungry person's, then what has taken years to achieve is stolen and/or destroyed by someone whom wants it for themselves.
But seriously division is a bad thing, and any grouping done needs to be done in a careful way as not to offend others.
For them not understanding this, n00b gets non n00b, now wants to exclude other n00bs.
Not saying that's happening here but division in any club, clan or amassing or person's leads to this.
NINJAM at the moment is like a big open source environment, if people start trying to take chunks of it for themselves it then ceases to be NINJAM as we know it.
But if what was meant were already formed groups coming in and performing on NINBOT then I misunderstood. But that's not to say theme nights couldn't be arranged. NINBOT has 3 servers and there's others around too if NINBOT's servers are busy.
Tom has mentioned before about making each server themed, like ambient, rock and jazz etc, this could be a good idea now 3 servers are sorta public. Like 1 for ambient, new age, club, dance, Funky House and so on and another rock, pop, heavy metal and so on then another Jazz, Folk, Funk etc.
So long as there are open servers, no one (other than an admin) can stop anyone playing whatever they want.
I'm not sure how the themed server idea would work unless an admin were logged in at all times to screen for people turning up and disturbing the vibe, as it were... It might be easier to do something simple like DaMNeD first said: just have a particular day / time -- and then have someone to keep the peace.
I think the idea I got from Tom was more on the lines of separate "dynamically allocated" servers, so not ones newbies would run into by chance. Essentially, private rooms booked for a particular purpose, just as if you were running your own server. I imagine it's all very much up in the air, though!
